At the end of his life, Gustave Moreau (1826-1898) decided to transform his house into a museum assembling most of his work. He had extension work carried out and reproduced several of his earlier works in large format. He died before he could arrange the display, which was entrusted to his sole legatee, Henri Rupp. The museum opened in 1903. It houses 6000 of the painter’s works.
