From 1948 to 1955, Picasso stayed in Vallauris with Françoise Gilot and their two children. The painter decided to decorate a small 12th-century chapel in the town, which he imagined as a sort of “sanctuary of peace”. Painted in 1952, the two panels of War and Peace were inaugurated in 1959, when the building became a national museum.
