Rodin Museum

Museum

Constructed between 1728 and 1730 by Jean Aubert, the future architect of the stables at the Château de Chantilly, sold in 1820 to the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and confiscated in 1905 under the laws of separation of church and state, the Hôtel Biron was due to be demolished at the start of the 20th century. That is when several artists moved in, including Jean Cocteau, Henri Matisse, Isadora Duncan and Auguste Rodin, moving there in 1908 on the advice of Rainer-Maria Rilke. When the state acquired the property in 1911, Rodin offered to donate all his works and collections, provided the state allocated them to the Hôtel Biron, along with its gardens, to become the Rodin Museum. The project was finally accepted and the museum opened its doors in 1919, two years after Rodin’s death. It displays the multiple facets of the artist’s talent: his marble and bronze sculptures (the casts were kept in Meudon), as well as his drawings, paintings and engravings and the works in his personal collection (Antique and Medieval sculptures, paintings by Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, etc.). Furthermore, around 15 sculptures by Camille Claudel of the woman who was the great artist’s pupil as well as his inspiration, before taking her own direction.
