Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904)

This is the first major exhibition devoted to the work of Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris. For a long time Gérôme was stigmatised as the representative of sterile Academic art. Today he is recognised as one of the great image creators of the 19th century. The exhibition analyses how he developed a visual grammar, pushing the illusionist obsession to the point of strangeness. It reveals the dual identity of his works, both scholarly and popular, that makes him so valued today by art historians and general public alike.
