Containing fifty four objects covering the 17th through the 19th centuries and illustrating the princely arts of Mughal India, of the Deccani sultanates and of the Rajput kingdoms, as well as twenty jewels from Northern India, the Jean and Krishnâ Riboud donation represents an incredible endowment for the Guimet museum’s Indian collections.
There are translucent jade and rock crystal cups enriched with rubies and emeralds, chalcedony and jade dagger handles sprinkled with precious stones, flasks and powder horns made from exquisitely carved ivory, spice boxes and huqqa bases with enamelled decorations, artefacts made from shimmering mother of pearl, copper or silver encrusted bidri, varnished terracotta tiles with vegetable decorations, as well as sumptuous jewelry combining the brilliance of gems with the spark le of polychrome enamels ; all these artefacts add up to an amazingly seductive evocation of the sophisticated splendour of the courtly arts in the Indian kingdoms.
